Maren obtained her master’s degree in medical anthropology at the University of Amsterdam in 2012. Soon after, she conducted her first fieldwork with Doctors Without Borders on patient perceptions of new treatment modalities for visceral leishmaniasis in Bihar (India).
In 2018 she joined the Infectious Diseases Data Observatory (IDDO, Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health, University of Oxford) research group. As part of an international review team, she was developing a catalogue of literature on viral hemorrhagic fevers.
Since 2019 she has been working at the Medical University of Vienna. She was part of the EU funded Horizon 2020 project Sonar-Global (a social sciences network for infectious diseases) and in charge of conducting a systematic scoping review on vulnerability assessment tools in the context of infectious threats. In 2020 she carried out a qualitative study funded by the WWTF on challenges of healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic in Vienna. She joined the Horizon 2020 project CANCERLESS as project manager and researcher in 2022.
She is also a professional photographer, combining conceptual photography and social sciences.
