Standing Up for Higher Education: CHL participated at protest against university budget cuts in Austria

On May 27th, the Community Health Lab joined 28,000 protesters on the streets of Vienna to send a clear, unequivocal message to policymakers that budget cuts and disinvestment in higher education are a direct threat to our collective future. As a team deeply committed to health justice and dismantling structural inequities, we believe that academic institutions are critical pillars of a healthy, functioning society. Stripping these institutions of vital resources during a time of crisis is not only short-sighted, but it is also profoundly dangerous.

Our universities serve as essential defense mechanisms against some of the most pressing socio-political challenges of our time. At a moment when we are facing unprecedented levels of rising science skepticism, countering misinformation requires robust, independent research and active public engagement – both of which are severely stifled by budget cuts. Furthermore, underfunding higher education actively weakens democratic institutions by threatening academic freedom and critical thought, while simultaneously deepening social inequalities by restricting opportunities for social mobility and limiting equitable access for underserved communities.

Defunding research and education during times of societal strain creates an existential risk to progress. We demand sustainable funding, structural support, and a genuine, long-term commitment to the future of science from our policymakers. Do better, government!
